Porno for Pyros was a late addition to the Rockville Music Festival in Daytona Beach Florida due to Dave Navarro’s Covid issues. Janes Addiction cancelled and Perry stepped up with his other band for the slot. From what we heard the band hadn’t played together in several years and this was most likely going to be a hastily assembled group. Even with all of that I was still looking forward to seeing them especially since Perry and Stephen Perkins their drummer both hail from the original Janes. It was also announced that punk legend Mike Watt would be playing bass which added something special.
Before their set we were able to get a great spot up front. The Daytona audience was interesting to say the least with an abundance of over inebriation, poor diets and special dress codes. One especially zealous “tweaker” kept screaming he had to get up close to see his girl. He pushed and shoved his way annoying all within distance. Soon enough the security folks had enough and hurled his small disheveled frame over the barrier to be escorted out. It was that chaos along with the onset of the Porno set and a mosh pit interesting enough that began the show.
We soon realized that Stephen Perkins was not there unfortunately and was replaced by his drum tech. Mike Watt hit a few errant notes at the beginning and his bass tone really wasn’t quite right. As far as legendary maybe his better years are before him but kudos to him for getting up there still. Perry was in good spirit along with his wife and her friend who provided background singing and dancing much like they’re been featured in Janes shows for years.
